after a cold

December 18, 2005

tiny liquid torrents flow in the wind
smashing down into the roof
the moon is hidden behind water

my lungs flecked with fluid themselves
spasm to become dry
muscles ache in constant hardening

the cold is almost gone
after a week of feeling underwater
swimming in sticky substance

my body wins again

eye burn

December 1, 2005

low light, dark, night humming
white, blue monitor glow
so late

typing with rubber fingers
straining to keep my thoughts from falling
the world is fading away

tomorrow, what about tomorrow
driving, people, talking, thinking, eating
I know tomorrow too well

tonight I stayed up too late again
my eyes tell me this
I’ll catch up tomorrow night
maybe

Poof

November 22, 2005

I’m afraid of losing people

Here one moment and gone the next
when you’re not looking
poof

I want to keep an eye on them
Don’t let go of their hand
People can wander off
and disappear

Even when they come back
They might be different
Different enough to be
a new person

Lately I’ve noticed
They can change
Even when you’re watching them
or holding their hand

I could loose them
right in front of my eyes
poof

It’s a scary thing
To think about all the random things
every day
all the things that can take people away
or change them

It frightens me that people can go
poof

Purple Foot

November 20, 2005

Swollen, sore, purple foot
twisted ankle
pushed to the limit
strained to a very loud
POP

Inflated tissues
pumped with fluid
overfilled and bursting
turning dark
purple

Pack it with ice
cool it down
shrink it
wrap it up tight
squeeze the swelling
swollen
but be gentle

Vicodin
pulls the plug
Is my foot still there?
Hello?

Tipping in crutches
Wavering down the hall
to the bathroom
a minefield of toys on the floor
lying in wait
attracted to
the foot magnet

Clock hands spin
Sun up and down
Music and sounds
Food and drinks
Coffee – lots of coffee

Everything heals
Build and rebuild
Blood and sinew
interwoven and fastened
Getting back to normal
Almost

Every step
careful
the body fragile
watch it
don’t break it again
a week with a purple foot
sucks
